What is OCIA?
Formerly known as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the program through which non-Catholic adults receive formation in preparation for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and/or First Holy Communion). We are blessed to have a wonderful OCIA program providing excellent formation for those who desire to become fully initiated into the Body of Christ.
When and where do the sessions meet?
The OCIA sessions are held on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm in the Conference Room at Newman Heights.
How long does the OCIA process last?
For most initiates, the process lasts two semesters, beginning in the fall and culminating in full reception of the Sacraments of Initiation shortly after Easter.
Can non-students join the program?
Yes! While the program is primarily geared toward students, we welcome any adults who are interested in joining the Church through St. Augustine's. If you would prefer a different format, St. Thomas Aquinas has adult sessions each semester as well.
Are you aggressive about making OCIA initiates Catholic?
Of coures, we share the desire of Our Lord, who wills that all people become part of His family, the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Apart from Christ, we do not know of any other means of salvation. However, we understand the fact that an initiate's decision to become Catholic must be their own, completely free of high-pressure or coersion.
